Because you don't just want a website. You want customers.

Your Website Planner

Because you don't just want a website. You want customers.

Roll up your sleeves. Here's a beginner's blueprint for planning your next site, blog or online store

1.  Site Goals
2. Start with 3-5 Core Pages
3. Look at other Sites You Like
4. The Home Page
5. Making Text Engaging
6. Personalizing The Theme
7.  Boost Traffic
8. Start a Blog

1. Site Goals

Being clear on why you are starting your site and what you want to accomplish is an important first step to starting your site. The number one reason why people don’t finish their site is because they don’t have a clear vision of what they want to create. Don’t let that happen to you! Invest a few minutes to come up with a plan and it will be that much easier and rewarding to create a site that achieves your goals.

Take a step back and think through your main site goals and write them down.

  • Why am I starting this site?
  • What are my site goals?

Here are a few of the goals you might consider for your website. It is possible to pursue multiple goals at the same time, just make sure the effort that goes into secondary goals doesn't take away from the primary goal:

Online Pamphlet/Electronic Brochure
If you connect with customers by telephone, this is an ideal way to instantly deliver a pamphlet to them. No mailing, no delays, they can even call up your information while you are on the phone with them. This website has to look credible and be choc full of information.

Credibility Booster
If you are selling a big ticket item, particularly one that requires a good reputation, a website can help. This website should look upscale and focus on credibility-boosting content. It is ideal for consultants and business-to-business service providers.

Lead Generator
An excellent use for a website in many non-retail businesses is as a lead generator. The idea is to funnel traffic (website users) into the site and encourage them to take action. Such action might be to call you, to request a brochure, to request a free sample, a free quote etc. The main requirement for this is the maximum amount of targeted traffic possible, of people interested in what you have to offer.

Email Address Gatherer
This is really a form of lead generation, but it is unique in that you are not trying to sell through the website, but through an email newsletter (also called an ezine). The website is there primarily to pique interest, and the newsletter is there to build affinity and trust in order to make the sale. You need to have a newsletter set up, and you need targeted traffic.

Of course, if you sell hard goods, electronic goods or even many services, you can make the sales right online. You need some form of payment gateway and/or shopping cart, and your website needs to be able to make the sale from start to finish, which is not always easy. Of course, you also need customers in the form of targeted traffic.

2. Start with 3-5 core pages

Whether you are a beginner or a pro, we have everything you need to plan your site, blog or online store. This simple guide will help you think through your site and give us ideas and inspiration for how to best bring your vision to life.

We recommend starting your site with 3-5 core pages. Begin with the most important pages first, you can always add more later (there’s no limit) and most people continue to grow and evolve their site over time. Core pages provide the main navigation menu for your site and should allow visitors to easily find what they are looking for. Try to keep them to 6 or less so that your site is clean and easy to navigate. Add sub-pages underneath core pages as needed to further break down and organize your information into digestible chunks.

Common page types
Here are a few of the most common types of pages and the information that typically goes on them to use as a starting point. Keep in mind that you can create any page types you like and get creative with the page names based on the unique goals for your site. The possibilities are endless.

Home Page

  • This is the first page that visitors see when they arrive at your site - it’s where you make your first impression.
  • Tell what your site is about, ideally in 50 words or less. Make sure anyone who visits your site will quickly understand what it’s about without having to do a lot of reading.
  • Think about who will be visiting your site (e.g. customers, friends, family, potential employers, new prospects, etc.) and put yourself in their shoes. What will they want to know? Make sure they can quickly find that information from this page. Resist the urge to put everything on this page and let visitors explore other areas of your site from your navigation menu.
  • Try to include a few relevant high quality photos to create a visually appealing design and make your site stand out - if you don’t have any available, see if you can tap a friend that’s into photography to help get you started.

About Page

  • Typically one of the most visited pages on a site. People are curious and want to learn about you - don’t be shy.
  • Tell your story, ideally in 300 words or less. Some questions to consider on this page: who are you, where are you, why are you are doing what you are doing, how did you get here and anything else you want people to know.
  • Include a high quality photo of yourself or something relevant or meaningful to you and your site.

Contact Page

  • Every site should have a way for visitors to quickly and easily get in touch with you. Consider including a contact form where you designate what information you want the visitor to provide so you can get back to them with a helpful response.
  • Add a map if you have a physical location so people can find you.
  • If you want to get creative with the navigation name for this page consider: ‘Talk to me’, ‘Say hello’, ‘Get in touch’ in addition to the more basic ‘Contact me’.

Showcase, Features or Products Page

  • A photographer might make this a gallery page with lots of high quality photos of their work in a beautiful slideshow format.
  • A dog walking service could provide information about their services and pricing with a clear way for visitors to schedule a walk such as a button linking to the contact page.

Blog Page

  • A blog is a great way to share your knowledge  and show your passion. It will help position yourself as an expert on a topic or provide an area on your site where you post new information regularly. Blogs give visitors a reason to come back and an easy way to see what’s new. You can start a site that is only a blog (in which case your homepage is your blog) or you can add a blog as a page on your site.
  • If you are trying to grow the number of people visiting your site, a blog can be a great way to get more traffic from search engines. The more relevant information you have on a topic, the more likely search engines will be to show your site as a result for relevant keywords. We can link your blog posts so they automatically appear on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and other social media.
  • So what should your blog be about? Some examples: A dog walking service could blog about tips for taking care of pets, a pottery maker could blog about upcoming art shows, projects they are working on and general musings on art, a real estate agent could position herself as an expert on a neighborhood by blogging about the area. Get creative based on your unique goals and expertise to think about how a blog could support your site and get customers.

3. Look at other sites you like

At this point you should have a pretty solid idea of what you want to include on your site. Now is a great time to get some outside perspective and polish your plan. Looking at other sites with similar goals can be a great way to spark additional ideas. Do a quick search and find at least 3 examples. Look through each site and take stock of what you like and don’t like and use that to refine and improve your web plan. Now you’ve got your plan locked down it’s time to start assembling the information you need and move on to organising your site.

4. The all-important home page

Here's some tips to make sure your website is "sticky". To make sure visitors don't bounce. But first, bear this in mind: One of the hardest thing to do in business is to adopt your customer's perspective. We're so caught up in running our business day-to-day, that we kind of lose sight of the wood for the trees. Here comes something you probably won't hear from the average website designer ... Your website should not actually be about your business. It should be about your customers.

Contrary to everything you'll probably learn in an "Internet Marketing 101" class, talking too much about your company, your product or your service — has one simple result: People BOUNCE.

Instead talk about your customers, your customer's problems and the benefits of your service. Talk in an emotionally engaging way about your customer and focus on their needs. Make sure your home page is 'sticky'. In the few seconds, it should answer your customers' three questions:

  1. What is it?
  2. Who’s it about?
  3. What do I get?
  • Your customer wants to get an immediate affirmation that they are in the right place, so make sure you communicate what it IS that you’re talking about with words and pictures.
  • Your customer wants you to talk about them and their wants primarily — not about yourself, your company, your "brand", or your product primarily.
  • Your customer wants to know what they’re going to get, so say it as quickly and directly as possible.
  • Your customer also wants you to talk to them directly, using the words “you” and “your” more than any others.
  • Challenge yourself to achieve the power and simplicity of a simple effective message.

CustomerGetters can help you get to the "heart and soul" of your business ... your message, your story, your USP, your mojo, what sets you apart and makes you different and appealing to your existing customers (and/or to a slightly different market). It's amazing how everything flows easily once you find your centre of marketing gravity.

5. Make text engaging

Use  multiple columns to create a horizontal layout of elements that are side by side. Multiple column layouts often create a more balanced and polished design so definitely play around and experiment to see what looks the best. When we have a lot of information to include on a single page, we experiment with layouts to find the best way to organize and present it to your visitors. It's important to "break up" huge slabs of text with the following engagement devices, to name a few ...

  • Bullets & Numbered Lists - are a great way to break down large amounts of information into easily digestible chunks
  • Subheads - a huge asset in that they provide an at-a-glance summary to skim readers, as well as breaking up the text and highlighting key points which can act as a hook to grab readers and entice them to read the rest of the text.
  • Divider/Spacing - create visual breaks and spacing between different sections of information to make your pages more readable
  • Font italics/bold/(brackets) - use italics and bold to add meaning to your information (and interesting after-thoughts)
  • Photos - use photos to help break up large areas of text but on one condition. Don't juyst throw an image in for the sake of it. The picture must actually assist the message you're trying to convey.
  • Consistency - we also make sure all text is formatted to a pre-determined style-sheet. This ensures consistency across the site. Consistency gives a vistor confidence that you have your act together, that you're organised. A predictable pattern throughout your site gives them the impression of professionalism and reliability.

6. Personalizing Your Theme

The theme we choose sets the tone for the overall look and feel of your site design. Keep in mind that we can easily change the theme of your site at any time to give it a different look. A theme can dramatically change the design of your site and you will want to let us know the look and feel you like so that we are sure to get it right.

Change your mind? Don't stress
But don't worry, it's easy to update your theme at any time. That's one of the reasons we chose the platforms we did. It means you can keep up with the latest trends and update the look of your site at any time. Changing your theme will not affect, change or delete the information you have added to the body of your site in any way and you can always go back to your original selection so don’t be afraid to switch things up.

One site, three ways:
Once you’ve chosen the right theme for your site, follow these tips to personalize it and make it uniquely your own.

Our Font Formula:
Font guidelines we follow to ensure a high quality design:

  • We choose basic fonts for all of your Paragraph Text (as that makes it easier to read)
  • We stick to black and grey fonts (or white if your site has a black background) for all of your Paragraph Text
  • We save bolder, fancier, more stylized fonts for your headlines and subheads
  • We use colored fonts sparingly (as they can compete with your design and the information you are presenting)
  • We create a consistent design feel by sticking with a limited set of fonts, sizes and styles across all of your pages ... K.I.S.S.

Our Photo Formula:
Here are some tips we keep in mind when choosing pictures:

  • We start with high quality original photos that are in focus with good lighting. If you don’t have any photos you want to use, we can take some at your business (in about an hour) or we can  search online through various photo libraries, like Unsplash or Shutterstock.
  • Choose horizontal photos for the banner area as they display best in this area.
  • Try to keep all images a consistent size and dimension. for example you'll notice in our blog, all our pics are the same size, for consistency. It brings visual discipline to the blog.
  • If your photos are high quality we can blow them up. But we never use pics so big they look pixelated or grainy.

Try to keep all images a consistent size and dimension.

7. Boost Traffic

Once we've published your site, we can help to start spreading the word to grow your visitors. We can arrange to

  • email your customers, friends and family;
  • mention your site in conversation and use Facebook and Twitter to bring visitors to your site.
  • add your site address to your marketing materials
  • add your site address to business cards, as a link from your email signature, to brochures, signage, and anywhere else you can think.

Measure your growth from the site stats dashboard
After we've set you up from your stats dashboard you'll be able to see how many unique visitors have come to your site each day and find out how many pages they’ve viewed. You’ll also be able to see fascinating details about who’s visiting your site and how they found you including: which pages they are visiting, what search terms they used to find you and which sites are referring people to you. We can also set up Google Analytics if you wish to go even more indepth.

Your stats dashboard includes fascinating insights ...

What do all these stats mean exactly?

  1. Pageviews: The number of pages visitors viewed on a given day. One visitor may visit three, ten, twenty, or however many pages.
  2. Unique Visitors: The number of individual visitors who came to the site. The unique visitor number should always be smaller than the pageviews number simply because one person. can visit multiple pages. So for example, if you had 25 unique visitors and 100 pageviews, that means that on average each visitor viewed 4 pages.
  3. Top Pages: The pages on your site with the most visits. The page called “ / ” is the home page and will typically get the most visits.
  4. Search Terms: This shows which search terms visitors have entered in Google, Bing and Yahoo! to find your site.
  5. Referring Sites: If a visitor clicked on a link from another site to reach your site then they have been “referred” to your own site by this other site. Having more in-bound links pointing to your site helps you rank better with search engines.

Tips to help you get your site highly ranked by search engines
Search engines like Google, Yahoo! and Bing are one of the most powerful ways to bring visitors to your site. While we automatically make sure that search engines can easily find your site, there’s still a lot more we can do but this depends on your priorities.

While there is no one "silver bullet" in SEO we can do the following for you to help make your site even more attractive and improve your rankings:

  1. Complete indepth on-page Search Engine Optimization and linking to authority sites.
  2. Setup your site description and choose relevant keywords for each of your individual pages in addition to your site overall.
  3. Verify your site with Google.

8. Start a blog

A blog is a great way to regularly add high-quality information to your site, which has two important benefits. First, it gives your visitors a reason to return often. Second, it’s likely to make your site more attractive to search engines. Also, if you use an iPhone or Android, you can download our apps so you can post and manage your blog while on the go.

9. Strategic Footer styles

Here are some example footer styles. It might be helpful to keep this page open in another tab to refer back to as you create your footer. But before we go on, we want to let you in on a tip. We always used to wonder what to put in what is often "the forgotten zone" ... the footer section at the base of your pages.

But here's a great tip. Your footer area can be a great place to 'advertise' your best pages. What a logical idea. After all it's the one area that is going to appear on every page, so it's a valuable piece of real estate. Even more so when you consider that the footer is the last thing people see after they read one of your pages or articles (assuming they get to the end).

So what better place than your footer, to transition them to the next step? In any case here are some ideas. Remember, these are just ideas! Feel free to mix & match — the final outcome is up to you!

The Transitioner
To the left of the footer, below, we have a handy reference point to transition people to the pages we want them to hit. Including "Get a Free Mock-up in 48 Hours". We also include a couple of ways to contact us. You want to be 'relentless but unobtrusive', in the way you encourage people to contact you. So this is a good way to be on every page, but in an unassuming way.

The Minimalist
Copyright, contact info and a small menu.

The Professional
Sitemap, logo, social badges, copyright and contact information.

The Socialite
Social badges, contact information, contact form and map.

The Testimonial

All done, have fun.
